Thinking of you

Days were long and night were cold,

Hope was thin and darkness thick,

Loneliness behind the corner.

But she only thought of you.

Worried over your long absence,

Excited over a certain look you gave,

Concerned over the future,

She would only think of you.

Your smile brought the sunlight,

Your absence brought the storm.

Her eyes would call you day and night

And she only thought of you.

And you loved her, then you left her,

Then came back, then left again,

Every day a new surprise.

But she only thought of you.

And she loved you, and she scared you,

And she gave to you her all

Hoping to get you for herself

Because she only thought of you.

As her lips were turning silent

And her look was getting grey

She was wondering if she ever

Would only stop thinking of you.

Alta / Another one

Intr-o alta viata as urca cate un munte in fiecare zi, echipata cu un rucsac care sa imi care toata bogatia si toate grijile, as cutreiera lumea cu sau fara tine, purtandu-te mereu in gand si avand grija ca toata lumea sa stie asta.

Intr-o alta viata as trai de zece ori mai mult in fiecare secunda, suprimandu-mi lacrimile in spatele unui zambet urias care sa ma cucereasca chiar si pe mine.

Sursa foto

As transforma regretele in oportunitati, as rasturna lumi, as crea altele.

***

In another life I would climb a mountain every day, equipped with a backpack to carry all my wealth and all my worries, I would travel the world with or without you, always carrying you in my mind and making sure everyone knew it.

In another life I would live ten times longer every second, suppressing my tears behind a huge smile that would conquer even myself.

In another life I would love you passionately, without shame, without regrets, without limits, without caring about the world's mouth, rules and obstacles. And you would love me too, because in another life I would be different, impossible to unlove, I would be everything I am not now, without everything that makes me cry and stalk like a sad ghost through this life. And you wouldn't stop loving me, because that would be my perfect life, different from this one, in a utopian good world.

A different life wouldn't make me weak, it would make me stronger. I'd do everything differently, or the same, but better. I would turn regrets into opportunities, I would turn worlds upside down, I would create new ones. And I would write books, to quiet the relentless voices that haunt me day and night, with phrases full of meanings clear only to me, with bitter metaphors, with opaque symbols.

See you there.

Dor de mine / Missing myself

Numaram zile, saptamani, apoi luni. Acum numar ani. Ani in care uitarea creste in mine ca o pacla neagra, acoperindu-ma, sufocandu-ma.

I used to count days, weeks, then months. Now I count years. Years in which oblivion grows inside me like a black fog, covering me, suffocating me. Every now and then I catch a bubble of air and contemplate my soul buckling under the weight of longing.

I no longer know what you look like, how you breathe, how you smile. With each new day the air grows thicker and the pressure becomes painful. I'm pressed down by everything, from all sides I receive only violent impulses. Sometimes I struggle to fall, but life won't let me. I don't even know how to breathe.

Sometimes I wonder if you've forgotten too. Or, better, if there was something for you to forget. Maybe I'm left with you there, in our parallel universe that we've built for ourselves, playing for a second the role of a confused and biased god. And maybe that's where I live, while here, in my decaying body, I've remained only an illusion, a pale ghost of what I once was.

I wipe my dry eye, nostalgic for the tears of yesteryear, and look away from the mirror. And she lies to me, as I lie to myself.

Optimism

Am ajuns odata cu inserarea. Pe maini aveam sange rosu, cald, in suflet aveam un gol mare.

Soarele stralucea. O sa-i fie bine!

***

I arrived once the evening came. There was warm, red blood on my hands, a big hole in my soul. You were looking at me raw and cold, disappointed in everything, disgusted with me. I had died and gone back there, under your slightly defiant gaze, I was wallowing on the floor, in my own routine, sick of you, humiliated by worry, bent by dark thoughts.

I wiped my face of the tears that ran hot down my cracked cheek, and let a trickle of blood slowly run down from my eyes to my beard. I felt the arrows of your gaze and knew right there and then that it was the last second.

It had begun to snow. I listened to strange music and prayed for his well-being. And the snow hid me from the unforgiving gaze, from all the unfounded beliefs, from oaths, lies and ambiguities. I felt every flake that touched my face hot and burning, leaving deep cracks in my skin. I hid my eyes for a second and you disappeared, all of you.

I was left alone, on the cold deserted street, thoughts and worries defying me, laughter deafening me, the thought of the end, and the prayer in my heart: be well. And I secretly wished I could save myself by saving him.

Towards morning I got up from the mud to make room for the others. I blinked often and admired my clean hands with which I then pecked my cold cheeks.

The sun was shining. He'll be fine!

Usa / The door

Apoi ceva s-a rupt.

Insa in timpul somnului usa s-a deschis si inchis de cateva ori, intr-o liniste desavarsita.

_____________

At the stroke of midnight, the pounding at the door rang out clearly—unmistakable, nothing less than a cry for help. She glanced at the clock in fright, then, her eyes still half-closed and irritated by the pale light of the bedside lamp, made her way toward the door. She opened it slightly, cautiously, carrying in her arms heaps of questions.

The stranger on the threshold looked at her with an emptiness that held both half a smile and half a sigh, woven together across his face. Though they were strangers, his eyes brought the story with them.

She was living then in a modest apartment, in a tall building with long corridors where many doors stood side by side. The doors were different—some carefully tended and freshly painted, new and gleaming; others old, their paint peeling, exhaling the scent of involuntary experience, of hurried years gone by.

Every evening and morning she would look at the doors, trying to sketch a complete picture. Some were slightly ajar, allowing a fragment of a glance to slip inside. Others stood half-open, enough for one to form a fairly clear impression of the tenant. And then there were the doors that seemed bolted forever, as though sunlight had never once forced its way through. She wondered whether anyone lived there at all—and if so, what strange species of neighbors they might be, so buried in secrets.

A simple calculation reassured her each day: the number of unbolted doors far exceeded those shrouded in mystery. And so she felt somehow safe, knowing that on the night she would need just one open door, she would surely find it.

She no longer remembered why she had knocked that evening on the closed door. It was a new door—lacquered, tall, well-kept and clean. Someone always came out of there; she had seen him a few times in passing. Yet the door closed each time without a sound, with perfect discretion.

She knocked timidly and did not even wait for an answer, turning quietly toward her own home. But the answer came. Soon the silence of the long corridor was disturbed by the sound of a key turning in the new lock, and the door opened just a crack.

Days of long conversations followed—always on the threshold. Their neighboring doors opened each day at the same brief signal and remained so for hours. The neighbors grew used to finding them there, sharing bursts of laughter and experiences, dreams and uncertainties.

And then, without her noticing, one day her door slammed against the wall. The hinges strained slightly, and every corner holding secrets surrendered to the light: a steaming mug of coffee, a glass of red wine from the previous evening, a few empty vodka bottles—broken—in a corner, shards of old dishes, an empty crib, a disheveled doll tossed onto a shelf.

She could no longer remember how many passed along the corridor to witness the horror. Her door, though always slightly open, had never allowed so many glances inside.

Then one night she believed she had had a strange dream. It seemed that a scoundrel obsessed with semantics had somehow managed to alter the known meanings of words simply because he disliked prefixes. Thus people were now forced to accept that incorrect was correct, indispensable was dispensable, incredible was credible, incompetent was competent—and countless other dizzying inversions.

She awoke shaken and, before she could even decide whether it had been a dream or not, ran to tell her fantastic tale in a single breath. He listened with wide eyes, one hand as though controlling the opening of the door.

Then something broke.

In the days that followed she gradually realized the dream had not been a dream at all. She began hearing voices behind his door—fragments of conversation, nothing that quite connected. They spoke a few more times, always interrupted by a ringing phone. One evening she hurried home, saw his door slightly ajar, cast a quick glance and noticed a torn letter lying on a table—but she withdrew at once: the door was not open for her.

His door never again swung wide against the wall, despite promises and postponements, assurances and pleas. On several nights she fell asleep on his threshold, afraid of missing some sign of life. Yet while she slept, the door opened and closed a few times in perfect silence.

In time, the doors closed one by one. Then the sound of chains securing discretion could be heard.

“So,” she asked him rhetorically, looking at him through the links of the chain that prevented the door from opening, “you say we were friends?”

Femeia care umbla cu un cutit infipt in spate / The woman who walked with a knife in her back

Iubirea fusese impartasita?

***

They saw her walking down the street, more of a shadow, her hair covering her secret face, her hands deep in her pockets, her head bowed to the ground. She wore no accessories, always dressed in a long, black coat, matching the weather outside, torn at the back by a large, bone-handled knife. She walked the cobblestone streets with it on her back, refusing to give details about how the knife got there, who the killer hand is, if she's in pain, why she's not bleeding and, most importantly, why she won't take the knife out of the wound to move on.

There was talk in the corners that she had once been in love with a beautiful man with piercing eyes, and under the burden of guilt she had stuck her dagger into her own back, to prevent the wings from growing. But more was not known: had they ever been together? Had the love been shared? Who was he and where had he disappeared to?

She dragged herself a little every day, in the questioning eyes of the others. After a while, still troubled by anxiety, people calmed down, stopped marvelling at the strange apparition. She was a commonplace in the landscape, she no longer asked for anything, not even etiquette, all that time wasted uselessly, in which they were struck by her lack of reaction, had convinced them that there was no point in struggling for her.

They found her one rainy morning, lying under a bridge, wrapped in her long black coat, her hair disheveled, lying messily on the stones, a sad smile frozen on her frozen face. A few feet from the breathless body gleamed the bone-handled knife, slightly stained with blood.

Police investigations immediately discovered the cause of death: the mysterious woman had been murdered, someone had pulled the knife out of her back.

***

I'm waiting for the cherry trees to bloom. I've been going to the makeshift orchard at the edge of the park for a month or so, watching every day for the shy buds that barely make their presence felt. Every day they are bigger, fuller, bolder. Some have already popped and exploded into a sea of tender colour, a pale, sensitive, inborn pink. The rest are waiting for more sun to come out before dressing for the ball.

In less than a week the pink will invade the orchard, and the yellow in the daffodil beds will keep it company. It will be a symphony of colours and scents. I wish I could be here to feel it, but I am far, far away. I feel myself getting lost in my own fingers, like the sand in Vama that day on the beach when I saw the snake in the water. Do you remember?

Do I find myself writing nonsense in a vacuum, or do I get even more lost, who cares? I'm here for a moment, then I disintegrate, come back, disappear...

There are less happy flowers, too, that I've already found trampled, fallen too soon, before being admired, sniffed, envied. They've gone too suddenly from bud to young corpse, lying in the grass. I saw no one mourn their cruel fate, it's as if they never even existed in the world, they left behind nothing but a whitish-pink stain in the clean grass, wet with dew and still scorched by the cool late spring wind.

Text din obligatie / A text because I have to

***

I made a commitment to myself, first of all (I'm trying to climb back to the top of my priority list, it's a bit hard, after all the dust that has settled over the years) to write something every day. Therapy, let's call it, or a primal need to feel somehow useful.

Today I have nothing to write, and the lines I said I'd quote are far too transparent for what I'd have to say, so I'll gnaw on my thoughts in silence and wait for them to subside and give me peace, or, if not, at least to settle into a more transparent order that I can analyze and put into practice.

The world is spinning without me. Well, not that I didn't know it, but it was nice that feeling that I was, at least for some, the center of the universe. Well, I'm not, and in case anyone else is under such illusions, I'm sounding a wake-up call: none of us are the centre of any universe! Nor are those we choose as the centre of our universe at all, either unwilling, disappearing or changing. Or, a centre should be unique and stable.

The sun rises, nature is probably slowly starting to break out of its numbness. I had to make it afternoon to notice it. I'm going to break away from everything that doesn't hold me captive and force myself to admire the view, live in the moment, shut up and forget.

I'll be back tomorrow, with the same nonsense, written in a different, more or less pathetic form.

A venit primavara, o alta primavara, niciodata aceeasi...

***

I returned to wipe away the spidery feathers that lay over my thoughts as they fluttered merrily to and fro.
I came back to write, only because in the morning, through the madness of the city, with its horns, cranes, shouts, madness, I heard, energetically in a tree, a woodpacker... And I was suddenly awakened to the reality of the spring that surrounds us, and that has come upon us, even if we no longer have the time or energy to notice it.
And it was so beautiful once... I was happily coming home with my backpack full of martisoare from school, and I was looking forward to the end of the week, to go with my father to pick up some wild violets and wild tulips... Actually no, I wasn't picking wild tulips anymore, since I had seen that poster on a tree in thenparc, saying that they were protected by law...
We have a place where we used to go every year, at the margin of town, which seemed so far away to me then. It was quiet and deserted, you could still hear a few cars passing in the distance...
I pass by there often, and every time I get this feeling of fatalism and the grief that it will never happen again. I've tried to hunt for another corner of the city, the new city that hosts me, but nothing is the same. It's ugly, sad and cold, and so unwelcoming...
Spring has come, another spring, never the same...

Oda nesimtirii / Ode to not giving a fuck

I struggle to type my thoughts, savoring the last remnants of my favorite ice cream. I'm alone and Black Sabbath is crying in the background, and the room rings hollow. And in the great search for subjects, I realize the immense mental void that is overtaking me. I realize that I don't care about anything tonight, I don't get upset or happy about anything. I'm neither disgusted, nor disgusted, nor excited, nor happy. I am inert, I am not moved, I am immune to everything, right now, in this moment, and I realize how good it feels. I wish I could find the recipe that brought me to this state, and turn myself into a sea of insensibility, so that I could be the happiest girl on earth. I managed to impose my insensitivity today, and I think I have never been more successful, at least with myself. I managed to suppress the feeling of great injustice I had suffered, of disgust and sadness. And I'm proud of that, I'm happy, just because I simply don't care. On some level, I have found the recipe for happiness and success.
